About Us
The 1A Faculty Athletics Representatives (1A FAR) is an organization of faculty athletics representatives at NCAA Division I institutions in the Football Bowl Subdivision, formerly known as Division 1A. All FARs who serve at FBS institutions are members of 1A FAR, and our board consists of one FAR from each of the 10 FBS conferences. We regularly support programming at the annual meeting of the Faculty Athletics Representatives Association (FARA), and we also support the annual 1A FAR Academic Excellence Awards.
The 1A FAR Academic Excellence Award recognizes outstanding student-athletes for their accomplishments in the classroom.

Our Mission
The 1A Faculty Athletics Representatives advocate for effective interaction, as well as academic and fiscal balance, between an institution’s academic mission and its intercollegiate program.
Our Purpose
The 1A Faculty Athletics Representatives address issues unique to FBS institutions, which requires a careful balancing of academic and athletics interests, student-athlete welfare and competitive success, as well as cost containment and additional revenue generation.
About FARs
The faculty athletics representative is a designation created and mandated by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). FARs must be members of an institution’s faculty and may not hold an administrative or coaching position in the athletics department. Duties vary by institution, but typically a FAR serves as a liaison to the athletics department. The 1A FAR is an advocate for the appropriate balance and effective interaction between an institution’s academic mission and its intercollegiate athletics program. All FARs who serve at NCAA FBS institutions are members of 1A FAR.
